Shoe Care Tips: Love Your Leather

Here at KEEN, we believe durability is sustainability. That's why we are constantly innovating to Consciously Create shoes that last longer and have less impact on the planet. And why we choose leather (from Leather Working Group-certified tanneries) for so many of our products.

Leather can last for decades when cared for correctly. It's extremely durable but does require some upkeep. So here are some tips from us to help you get a good long life out of your favorite leather boots, shoes, and sandals.

Note: You may want to go through the steps below more often if your leather shoes are worn often in the outdoors (where we like to wear ours). Cleaning and conditioning your leather shoes regularly will keep them looking their best and prevent them from drying out and cracking.

Cleaning

1. Remove laces and soak in soapy water.

2. Use a soft brush or damp cloth to wipe away any dirt or grime.

3. If you want to go the extra mile, use a leather cleaner like saddle soap. We recommend this one from Otter Wax.

Conditioning and Waterproofing

Leather can dry out and crack over time, especially if it’s exposed to harsh conditions. That’s where leather conditioner comes in.

• Apply a small amount of conditioner to your shoe using a cloth and buff in a circular motion. Conditioning every six months will help prevent dryness and keep your leather soft and comfortable.

• If you want some extra protection, you can apply a waterproofing wax that’s made for leather (just make sure you don’t use it on your nubuck or suede shoes as it will damage the nap). We like using this one from Nikwax because it’s PFAS free and easy to use.

Storage

It’s important to always let your leather shoes dry naturally. Leave your footwear to dry at room temperature out of direct heat sources. Things like sunlight, fires, and radiators can make your leather shoes dry too fast and end up cracking the leather.

When your shoes are taking a break, help them keep their shape and prevent any unwanted creases by using shoe trees or stuffing them with old newspaper. And if you’re done using them for the season, store them in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.

And that’s it! By choosing quality craftsmanship and giving them the care they need, your KEEN leather shoes will be by your side season after season. To learn more about caring for other types of shoes and materials, check out our Shoe Care FAQs!
